"Seven Deadly Sins" exhibition will be shown at Proto Gallery after controversial work was cancelled at Arlene's Grocery
Arlene’s Grocery, the popular Lower East Side bar, gallery space, and concert venue, has taken down the show featuring the work of Robert Preston, arguing that the artist’s work was too “aggressive” and “literal” for their venue. The show was slated to run through the end of the month and features a blown-up Bloomberg as “wrath” and Obama in an Egyptian headdress as “pride.”
“It just wasn’t our style,” explained Julia Darling, Arlene’s manager. “It sort of insults the viewer; it’s really kind of beating us over the head with a message.”
